Home Sweet Home

What’s Blooming Now

It's a cool, shady morning on the patio, and lots of things are in bloom here - the perfect spot for drinking my coffee - and I thought I'd share some flower photos with you. When mom was here in early May, we planted some flowers together over Mother's Day weekend.  Mom planted a big pot of zinnias and coleus right by my front steps, and they are going gangbusters now!  A few weeks ago,…
Life is Good

Life is good outside my front door

Life is good. That's not only what it says on my front door, but also how I feel when I pull into the driveway now and see the cute little shade garden that my mom and I planted on Mother's Day weekend. This little garden area has needed attention since I moved into the condo last year on July 2. There was a random mix of oddly placed plants, including some unkempt ivy, a smattering…

Patio Project

Ok, so, after a long dry spell, let's try to get back to normal life here, shall we? It's finally springtime in Ohio!  And my new place has a patio, which until recently looked like this. When I moved in last summer, working on this patio was the least of my worries.  (Remember there was a crazy long list of indoor projects that needed to be tackled!)  So I used it a couple of times…

First Christmas in my new home

My new home is decorated for Christmas, and I wanted to share a few photos with you.  The living room mantle is my favorite spot because it includes two of my best snowmen including one (on the left) which was made by my Aunt Connie.   The living room: It was fun to decorate this year since it meant figuring out where everything fits in the new place. (I've always wanted a tree in the…

A little less before, a little more after

Yet another project is accomplished at my new home.  The previously blue bathroom is newly painted.  It was a pretty blue, actually - reminded me of the colors of the chicory flowers that bloom along the side of the road in July, usually running parallel to the edge of a cornfield in the scrabble-stones along the edge of the asphalt.  But the blue didn’t match anything I own, and it looked a little shabby somehow…

Saying goodbye to the Pepto-vinyl bedroom

It's been 3 months now since I moved into my new home, and the list of projects I wanted to tackle is slowly but surely getting done.  I've been keeping a little list in Evernote of work that's getting accomplished - I love watching things get moved from the "to do" list to "done."  Here's what's on the "done" list now: Replaced a window in the living room that had a broken seal Paint dining…

Cactus and succulent terrarium

Mike and I made this cute little cactus terrarium recently, and I just love the way it turned out.  The whole project took about half an hour, and it only has to be watered once a month! Easy peasy.  We followed the instructions from Gardenista to a “T.”  If you decide to make one, here are a few things we learned that might help: Homegoods has a great selection of glass vessels at good prices.…

My makeovers are wrecking my manicures

I've been less than attentive to my blog for the past month.  Let’s recap the occurrences of this last month, shall we?  July 2, I bought a house. (Well, a condo, if you’re a stickler about these things.)  July 3 the DIY projects began.  July 4 - more DIY, plus a bad case of the African death flu or some other horrible virus that laid me flat and caused me to miss FIVE consecutive days…

A week from heaven (and hell)

So, it's Tuesday evening.  Let me tell you about what the last week has held. For starters, last Thursday morning, I closed on the condo!  It's all mine, and that feeling of being a homeowner and putting down roots after a year in a rental home is - well, heavenly.  I feel very grateful to be in the position to buy a home at all, let alone one that's so cute and adorable and totally,…

A new look for a new me

A month from today I’ll be moving into my new home.  Closing is actually July 2, and I’m not moving until July 11 - but I have big plans for those 9 days in between.  The former owner painted the inside walls a riot of colors, and before moving my furniture I’m hoping to neutralize some of that craziness.  Right now, the living room and kitchen paint is a super dark hunter green, with half…
